When you step (or roll!) off a Quiescence dive boat in Key Largo, you’re not just “getting in the water.” You’re entering one of the most vibrant and vulnerable marine ecosystems on the planet. We believe that exploring the ocean comes with a responsibility to protect it. That’s why sustainable diving isn’t a buzzword here; it’s baked into how we operate, teach, and dive.

Why Sustainable Diving Matters in the Florida Keys

Key Largo is the gateway to the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, a stretch of protected ocean that cradles some of the most vibrant and diverse coral in the continental U.S. Its reputation as one of North America’s premier dive destinations is well-earned. But beauty draws a crowd. With over 5.5 million visitors a year across the Florida Keys, the very act of experiencing this place puts pressure on the ecosystem we come to admire. A careless fin kick has the potential to scar the coral. Every anchoring decision impacts the reef and environment around it. Even the sunscreen on our shoulders has the potential to harm what we came to see.

At Quiescence, we believe the solution isn’t locking nature away, but making sure each encounter deepens connection and responsibility. When people fall in love with the ocean, they are more likely to fight for its future. We work hard to make sure our impact, and yours, helps protect the reefs for generations of divers still to come.

Our Partnerships with Conservation Leaders

Quiescence proudly collaborates with organizations leading the charge in marine science, education, and restoration:

REEF (Reef Environmental Education Foundation)

We support REEF’s mission to engage divers in citizen science. Our guests often take part in fish counts and surveys that contribute directly to marine research databases.

Coral Restoration Foundation

CRF is restoring degraded coral reefs, one fragment at a time. We educate divers about their methods and promote volunteer opportunities for those ready to take action.

NOAA & Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary

We adhere to NOAA guidelines and support the Sanctuary’s management goals. Our team actively participates in local initiatives to monitor reef health, report marine life sightings, and advocate for conservation-minded diving.

Specialty Groups

Quiescence is also a trusted partner for specialty groups who need more than a typical charter. From marine science teams and government agencies to documentary crews and research divers, we provide private vessels, experienced captains, and the logistical support required for fieldwork, filming, or specialty dives. Our reputation for discretion, professionalism, and flexibility has made us a go-to in the Keys for organizations doing serious work below the surface.

What Sustainable Diving Looks Like with Us

You won’t find us dragging anchor across a reef or rushing divers through delicate environments. Our captains and instructors are trained in low-impact diving and “Leave No Trace” principles:

  • We carefully select dive sites based on conditions and group experience so you get the best possible dive without contributing to site overuse.
  • We brief every diver on reef etiquette: neutral buoyancy, no-touch policies, and controlled finning techniques.
  • We provide reef-friendly products on board: more on that in the next part of this post.
  • And yes, we really do notice when you’re hovering too low over the coral. We’ll gently correct you—and thank you for caring.

Reef-Safer* Products Are Non-Negotiable

Many commercial sunscreens contain chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate which are known to bleach and harm coral reefs, even in small amounts. That’s why we use and recommend Stream2Sea, a reef-safer*, scientifically tested line of sunscreen and body care products. You’ll find it in our shop. You’ll hear us talk about it on the boat. We believe education starts with modeling better choices, and that even small swaps add up.

(Unlike vague “reef safe” claims, “reef safer” acknowledges the complexity of ocean health and our ongoing efforts to protect marine ecosystems responsibly.)

Quiescence has been part of the Key Largo dive community for nearly 50 years. Our conservation efforts go beyond partnerships and policies; they’re part of our daily decisions, from the products we stock to the dive sites we visit. This page is your starting point. In the coming months, we’ll be publishing more blog posts diving deeper into:

  • How to participate in REEF surveys
  • What divers need to know about coral restoration
  • Best practices for low-impact underwater photography
  • How sunscreen harms reefs (and what to use instead)

We invite you to follow along and dive with purpose!
